Christmas is the season to be jolly. And, what better way to get you in the mood than heading off on a magical Christmas market break? You’ll be wrapped up warm in knitted scarves, gloves and fluffy socks, ready for a day of wandering around different stalls and seeing the highlights of the city.
As soon as you arrive, you’ll be hit with the smell of mulled wine and warm waffles as well as the low buzz of talking, bartering and laughter. Plus, Amsterdam’s guaranteed to have a cosy feeling with the Dutch architecture and over 200 different canals that go through the city. So why not take in the views, grab a crepe and watch the world go by.
Before I go away anywhere, I always research everything from things to do to the local currency and how much spending money I should bring. Here’s my guide on how much money you should take for your Christmas market break to Amsterdam.
Okay, so before we get down to the nitty gritty, here are my top five markets you should visit on your trip:
- ‘Funky Xmas Market’ in Westergasfabriek
- ‘Amsterdamsche Kerstmarkt’ in Kromhouthal
- ‘Ice*Village Amsterdam’ in Museumplein
- ‘Kerstmarkt Natuurpark’ in Natuurpark Lelystad
- ‘Amsterdamse Winterparad’e in RAI Amsterdam
The average cost of Amsterdam Christmas markets
On your Christmas market break to Amsterdam, make sure you change your pounds into Euros so you can buy baubles, beer and basically anything you need.
Here are my estimated costs for your seasonal trip:
Amsterdam Winter Parade: €7,50 (free for children under 13)
Unlimited travel on tram/bus/metro (24hrs): €7,50
Ice skating: €13
Cup of coffee: €2,50
Dutch wooden shoes: €30
Mulled wine: €3,50
Amazing memories: priceless
When it comes to how much money you should take for your holiday, it depends entirely on your budget. For my trip here last year, I budgeted for €100 a day, and that was just for myself. If you’re travelling with your whole family, you should take into account not only food, activities and travel but anything you might need to buy for your kids.
