We’ve all heard of New Year traditions like ‘new year, new me’, kissing at midnight and attempting to sing Auld Lang Syne. But, did you know there are other ways to celebrate the last day of the year? Instead of going to your local pub, having a family party or hitting an overcrowded club, do something different to ring in the bells like exploring somewhere new.
1. Eating 12 grapes
In Spain, if you manage to eat a grape every time the bell strikes at midnight, you’re guaranteed luck for the rest of the year.
2. Hanging an onion on your door
On New Year’s Day in Greece, you’ll be expected to hang an onion from your front door, which is a symbol of rebirth.
3. Dropping ice cream
Do you have a sweet tooth? In Switzerland, it’s custom to drop a scoop of ice cream on the floor to ensure you have a successful year.
4. Wearing red underwear
If you’re heading to Italy for your New Year’s celebration, it’s tradition to wear red underwear as it’s said to bring you luck, love and prosperity.
5. Break a plate
Throwing unwanted crockery at your friends and neighbours doors in Denmark is believed to bring you luck for the year ahead.
6. Put mistletoe under your pillow
Sleeping with a mistletoe leaf under your pillow on New Year’s is supposed to help you fall in love in Ireland.
7. Sprinkling salt on your doorstep
It’s tradition in Turkey to sprinkle salt on your doorstep as it’s thought to bring peace to your home.
