If you’ve ever seen the TV series ‘What Happens in Sunny Beach’, you’ll perhaps agree with me that Bulgaria might be seen as a vibrant party destination. But with it being such a great value destination, and because I love ticking off a new country each time I go on holiday, my other half and I chose to visit Bulgaria while we were budgeting for our wedding. I have to say, it actually exceeded my expectations, so here are seven reasons why I think you’ll like Bulgaria holidays more than you think.
1) The beaches
As the resort names would suggest, Bulgaria is all about the beaches; and they just so happen to be stunning. Both Sunny Beach and Golden Sands, among other resorts, boast mile upon mile of beautifully soft sand; perfect for making the most of the many water sports on offer or simply to lay back and soak up the sun. There are no less than ten beaches in Bulgaria that have gained Blue Flag status, meaning they’re both clean and safe for swimming and, basically, incredibly good.
2) Nessebar Old Town
When I visited Bulgaria, I stayed in the beautiful resort of Nessebar. The reason why I was drawn to Nessebar in particular is that this ancient seaside city has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, meaning it’ll always retain its authentic Bulgarian charm. Perched on a peninsular, its stunning Old Town is a maze of quaint cobbled streets and traditional wooden architecture, with a multitude of restaurants and bars, as well as plenty of independent galleries and souvenir shops. You’ll also find plenty of historical churches and sites to explore too; discovering something different around every corner.
3) It’s perfect for families
Whether you choose to stay in Nessebar, Sunny Beach or one of the other popular beach resorts in Bulgaria, such as Duni, you won’t fail to find things that the whole family will love doing. Obviously Bulgaria holidays are centred around the coast’s incredible beaches, but you’ll also find plenty of other activities and attractions to keep the kids, and the big kids, entertained. Bulgaria loves a waterpark, so choose a hotel that’s got its own on-site waterpark, or visit Action Aquapark in Sunny Beach or Aqua Paradise in Nessebar. Kids of all ages will love the rides and amusements at Luna Park Sunny Beach too.
4) Great days out
If you like to have plenty of things to do while you’re on holiday, you’ll be more than happy with the great range of excursions on offer to you when you go to Bulgaria. One of my favourite days out was to the beautiful and ancient town of Sozopol, about an hour down the coast from Sunny Beach and Nessebar. Like Nessebar, it’s got an incredibly picturesque Old Town, with bustling narrow streets and inviting cafés and bars, enticing you in with their mouth-watering cakes on display out front. (Okay, well it worked with me.) Don’t miss out on a chance to enjoy dinner and a mind-blowing variety show at Khan’s Tent in Sunny Beach; it was the best night of our holiday.
5) It’s excellent value
As I already touched upon when I mentioned wedding budgeting, Bulgaria is a really affordable holiday destination. An All Inclusive holiday to Bulgaria could set you back only a few hundred pounds, but then the proximity of hotels to resort centres means you’ll still be able to afford to eat and drink out if you fancy a change from your hotel’s buffet restaurant; everything is so close together. As well as being great value for money, it’s also a short flight from the UK (just over three hours from London). And with Bulgaria boasting such hot and sunny summers, it’s only a short distance to go for guaranteed sunshine.
6) The nightlife’s there if you want it
‘What happens in Sunny Beach’ might not be for everyone, but if you’re looking for somewhere to party with your friends on holiday, then it really is the place for you. By day, there’s a great vibe around the resort, with bustling streets and loads going on down at the beach. It hardly resembles the wild images you’ve conjured up in your head, mainly because all the partygoers are still in bed or relaxing by the pool, recovering from the night before. But night time is when Sunny Beach really comes to life, with colourful parties, pumping clubs and non-stop entertainment all around.
7) Meadows in the Mountains Festival
If you’re looking to dance in the forest and under the stars then you’ll love Bulgaria’s most unique festival, Meadows In The Mountains Festival. This isn’t about an A List lineup but is about having a community feel and an experience that’s surrounded by wildlife.
