What better way to see a destination than from the saddle of a bike? You’ll fill your lungs with fresh air, explore the sights at your own pace, and come back home feeling great about yourself. Whether your kids are cycling pros or prefer to ride behind in a trailer, I’ve picked out a selection of great destinations that tick all the boxes to provide excellent cycling holidays for families.
Discover the olive groves and fragrant vineyards of the Italian countryside on a cycling holiday to Tuscany. Although it’s known as a hilly region, you’ll find plenty of paved pathways that make ideal cycling routes for families. Keep the kids happy with stops at gelato bars along the way.
Often referred to as the ‘cycling island’, Kos has the largest bike path network in Greece, stretching out across 15km. Kos is a relatively flat island, with the areas around Kos Town being some of the most popular cycle paths. If you’ve got older children who like a bit of adventure, head to the centre of the island where you’ll find forest mountain bike trails.
Lanzarote, Canary Islands
With its mild climate and minimal traffic, Lanzarote is a great choice for a cycling holiday. You’ll find plenty of bicycle hire places dotted around the island, so there’s no need to worry about packing your own. Hire super-sleek carbon mountain bikes and explore Lanzarote’s black volcanic terrain, or alternatively, enjoy a leisurely family ride along the asphalt country roads.
With bike-only bridges, over 500km of cycle paths, and an estimated 10,000 bikes parked around Amsterdam Central Station every day, it’s no surprise that Amsterdam is a bike lover’s paradise. Pop into a bicycle hire shop and you’ll be faced with a huge choice; you’ll see everything from traditional Dutch bikes (with pedal brakes and no gears) to kids’ bikes of all sizes. Our top tip; reserve your bikes in advance to ensure you get the right selection for you and your family.
Tenerife, Canary Islands
Tenerife is a dream cycling destination; so much so that Bradley Wiggins himself trained here for the Tour de France. But don’t let that intimidate you; Tenerife is full of easier routes that are perfect for families. For something really special, plan a route that includes the dramatic black sands of Puerto de La Cruz and the lush green Botanic Gardens.
