Going on holiday is your opportunity to do something new with your family. At Christmas, you might have caught Channel 4’s TV special – Secret Life of Five Year Olds on Holiday with Thomas Cook. The show follows children and their families to one of our Sunwing Resorts in Turkey, where they experienced fun and exciting activities on holiday like trying out huge water slides. If you didn’t watch the show first time around, you can catch up on All4 here.
Going away not only gives you the chance to do something new, but you’ll learn about different cultures and cuisines as well as being able to let your hair down. Instead of waiting until you go away to plan your holiday, here are 6 holiday activities you need to try with your kids.
1. Eat like a local
You don’t need to be as brave as the families on the Secret Life of Five Year Olds on Holiday when trying new food. Go with something simpler and do your research on what local dishes your destination offers. Going to Spain? You and the kids will love tucking into a flan: a sweet treat that wobbles like a jelly and is made from milk or cream, eggs and sugar.
2. Befriend someone who speaks a different language
Before going on holiday, get the kids excited by learning some easy phrases in the local language. For a family trip to Turkey try saying “Merhaba” to local families on the beach; this means hello. Even if there’s a language barrier, it won’t stop little ones playing a game of football or volleyball.
3. Go to a night market
From Marrakech to San Francisco you can go to a night market and grab a bargain. Keep the family close and discover what intricate trinkets are hidden within the winding souks and crowds of people. You can teach your kids how to barter, and let them try it out when buying a gift for friends or family back home.
4. Sleep under the stars
At our Casa Cook Chania hotel, kids will learn in exciting new ways with interactive activities including cooking, painting and overnight camp sessions. Parents are invited to spend the evening at the tropical-style Beach club, while getting a relaxing massage in the nomad tent or enjoying yoga at the pavilion.
5. Go to a mud bath
Just like in Secret Life of Five Year Olds on Holiday, you and your family can relax in a traditional Turkish mud bath. Not only is this a chance to have a mud fight without getting in trouble, but there are also significant health benefits, from reducing wrinkles to relieving tummy ache.
6. Grab your goggles and go snorkelling
Sunshine, warm water and seeing fish swimming in the ocean; all things that’ll get both the little and big kids excited. No matter if you’re an experienced diver or if it’s your first time snorkelling, you’ll love swimming among brightly-coloured fish and coral reefs. Sardinia, Menorca and Crete are some of the best places in Europe for snorkellers.
