Sugar, spice and all things nice – that’s what you’d traditionally expect from a holiday. But, as it’s Halloween, I’ve got some spine-tingling ghost stories up my sleeve that’ll leave you with nightmares. On the frightside, if you’re not into the paranormal, these destinations offer wicked city breaks, boo-tiful beaches and bloody good food. Here are my top five spooky places to visit around the world:
1. Alcatraz, USA
Alcatraz Island is considered one of the most haunted places in America and has been home to some of the most notorious prisoners in history, including Al Capone. You’ll definitely get shivers down your spine when you walk down the ‘main line’. Just try not to feel too much like a dead man walking. Check out our spooktacular deals and book a San Francisco break now.
2. Poveglia, Italy
This beautiful Italian island has been struck with many spooky goings on, giving it its well-deserved reputation for being haunted. Allegedly 100,000 plague victims and mental patients are buried on this small island, so it’s no surprise that human bones still wash up on the beach. If you dare to visit, you can find the island around an hour and a half’s drive from Venice.
3. Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town
Legend has it, Governor van Noodt was cursed, and his soul can never leave the walls of Castle of Good Hope. You can still hear the ringing from the bell tower, despite the fact the turret was barricaded years ago. Trick or treat yourself to a break in Cape Town and make sure you visit this fangtastic attraction.
- Rose Hall, Jamaica
The Rose Hall story goes, that a White Witch named Annie Palmer practiced dark magic, murdered three of her husbands and was cursed by her former slave. After Annie died, she was reportedly buried in a tomb on the grounds as part of a voodoo ceremony, and can still be spotted to this day. 5. The Island of the Dolls, Mexico City
South of the centre of Mexico City, you’ll find the Island of Dolls. The former owner reportedly discovered a dead girl and doll close by. Out of respect, he hung the doll from a tree but soon began to hear spirits. He then started collecting dolls and filled the whole island with these creepy toys. Even more disturbingly, the owner was found dead in the same spot many years later. Today, you can team up a visit here with a twin-centre break.
