We all know that Spain is a great all-rounder when it comes to picking an amazing destination for your next holiday. But the question is, where abouts in Spain? It’s a pretty big country, after all, especially when you take into account the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands too. So let me go into a little more detail about one particular area that I think you’ll love if you’re planning your dream family holiday. Here are eight reasons why the Costa Dorada is perfect for families.
1) PortAventura World Resort
One of the largest theme parks in Europe, a visit to PortAventura is an absolute must when holidaying on the Costa Dorada. You can explore the different districts, experiencing all the amazing rides, shows and shops as you go; and you’re bound to love every minute of it.
2) Incredible beaches
Costa Dorada literally translated means ‘Golden Coast’ and is named after the colour of the sand when the sun shines down on it. With its 81 kilometres of coastline and 28 Blue Flag beaches, you’ll find countless beautiful spots to spend your days; from secluded shallow coves to bustling stretches of sandy beach, perfect for the kids to play.
3) Water parks
It may not be the biggest waterpark, but Aquopolis is certainly one of the most fun. It’s an excellent day out for all the family, with rides suited to the little ones as well as the bigger adrenaline junkies among you. You can also make a splash on the rides for little kids and big kids alike at PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park.
4) The Roman Tarraco
Found in the historical port city of Tarragona, the Roman Theatre of Tarraco is well worth a visit if you like to add a little culture to your holidays. You and the kids will love looking around the amphitheatre, imagining times gone by. If you enjoy this, there are plenty of other fascinating ancient ruins to explore in the area too.
If you’re an active family, then you’ll definitely be able to keep yourselves busy on the Costa Dorada. There are some excellent trekking opportunities to enjoy and cycling is really popular too. Plus, it’s a great way to bring the family together, right? Head to the resort of Cambrils where you can hire bikes and discover its 27 kilometres of scenic bike trails.
6) The resorts
No matter what your family loves to do on holiday, you’ll find a resort on the Costa Dorada to suit your every need. You have the family favourite, Salou, with its popular Llevant Beach, or its picturesque neighbour of Cap Salou, with its fun tourist train. Then there’s the charming resort of Cambrils or peaceful La Pineda too. The choice is yours.
The great thing about the Costa Dorada is that you’re just a stone’s throw away from the incredible city of Barcelona. It makes for an excellent day of sightseeing; you can jump on the hop-on, hop-off bus and visit such places as Camp Nou, Park Güell, Las Ramblas and even the city’s large, sandy beach.
If there’s one thing Spain can do really well, it’s hold a celebration. The Costa Dorada is home to a whole host of different festivities and activities throughout the year, which would be amazing to join in with if your family holiday falls at the same time. Most are held between April and October, with the biggest being at the end of June in Reus and the end of September in Tarragona.
