Limassol Castle in Cyprus
Journey to the beautiful marina located in the old town to enjoy a bit of prehistoric architecture. The exact date when the castle was built is unknown but the first official reference to the fort dates back to 1228, during affairs with Germany.
Additionally, legends say that the castle was where King Richard I married Berengaria of Navarre and crowned her Queen of England in 1191. From battles and earthquakes the fortress suffered a great deal and was rebuilt by the Ottomans in 1590, which is the interesting structure you can see today. Explore the castle's remains and walk through the ground floor halls down the steps to the prison cells.
The Medieval Museum of Cyprus is located in one of the fort houses. Learn about the history of the castle and see all the unearthed artefacts that they have on display. Some findings have religious significance, which indicates that the castle could have been the city's first cathedral.
