Catalina Island Dominican Republic
If you're searching for a tropical paradise for your next getaway, you'll find everything you've been looking for in Catalina Island. It may be a small island in the Dominican Republic, but Catalina Island has got more to it than meets the eye. Acting as your gateway to the mesmerising Underwater Museum of Captain Kidd's Shipwreck, you'll have plenty to keep you busy. This little-known hidden treasure is surprisingly quiet and doesn't attract many crowds. It's your perfect escape for some peace and quiet in the sun. Sink your feet in white sand beaches and practice your backstroke in the calm sea. You're also a short walk away from a range of tasty restaurants and cafes, which is great if you're feeling hungry after a busy day of exploring.
Uncover the National Park
Did you know that the entire island of Catalina is a protected Natural Park? The local wildlife, including wild hares and racoons, are free to roam undisturbed in their natural habitat. So, there's a good chance you might see a few during your visit. If you happen to be munching on a snack as you stroll around the park, you can bet a cheeky racoon is hiding nearby waiting to gobble up the crumbs. Thankfully, people don't bother the local wildlife, and they're kept at a safe distance from tourists.
Reaching Catalina Island Dominican Republic requires a short boat or ferry ride. You'll begin your journey at Bayahibe or from a resort in Punta Cana. Many resorts offer excursions to the island. If you're staying nearby, it's worth asking around to find out when and where the next boat is leaving.
Dive into the sea
You've got three beaches to choose from; one on the East, North and West of the island. The one on the west of Catalina Island is dedicated to having lots of fun under the sun. Here, you can dip your toes in the warm water and go for a refreshing swim near the shoreline to cool down. Or, you can continue to venture beneath the water's surface for some scuba diving or snorkelling. Under the sea, you'll meet more than a few fish along with colourful coral and fauna.
Investigate an ancient shipwreck
Catalina Island is the entryway to the Underwater Museum of Captain Kidd's Shipwreck. Almost 320 years ago, Captain William Kidd lost his ship. Today, you can take a scuba diving to uncover the wreck, which has been coined as a ”living museum of the sea'. Coral reefs will greet you along the way.
Visit La Romana
With Catalina Island's convenient location near the Dominican Republic's Caribbean coast, you can easily embark on a trip to the nearby city of La Romana. Packed with pretty beaches, exotic palm trees and miles of golden sands, La Romana gives you a sweet taste of life in the Caribbean. If you want a break from the beach, hop on a scenic truck safari and let it take you through the city's cocoa foams, sugarcane fields and across sweeping green hills.
While you're here, make time to see the Altos de Chavon, a replica of a Mediterranean village with an Italian feel. Stroll through its cobbled lanes and visit quaint workshops, cafes and impressive art galleries. Learn about the history of the region at the archaeological museum. Here, you'll find fascinating pre-Colombian artefacts and other historical items.
