We are committed to working with customers, employees, suppliers, local communities,
industry, government and non-governmental organisations in order to deliver responsible
tourism. In particular, we actively support and engage in the work of the Federation of Tour
Operators and the Travel Foundation.
Together with the support and guidance of multi-stakeholder groups, we aim to build a tourism
industry which brings pleasure to those who travel with it, a future to the places and the
people who provide it, as well as a profit to all those who are involved in supplying it.
Working Together
Federation of Tour Operators (FTO): The Thomas Cook Group is an active member of the FTO’s Responsible Tourism Committee, where it plays a key part in developing tools for managing sustainability.
The Travel Foundation: The Travel Foundation is a UK charity which works to protect and enhance the natural environment and improve the well-being of destination communities. It works in partnership with the travel industry and the Thomas Cook Group is proud to be a major fundraiser for the charity, directly benefiting projects around the world. Enable Holidays: In 2005, Thomas Cook became the first major high street travel agent to sell holidays for people with impaired mobility, in partnership with specialist Enable Holidays. Enable, which is endorsed by national disability charity Scope, is a holiday company for people with impaired mobility and their friends and family. A unique tour operator, Enable has hotels in 20 popular overseas holiday destinations which offer exceptional facilities for people with disabilities and combines hotel stays with airport assistance and adapted taxi transfers.
WRAP:As a government sponsored agency for the promotion of recycled paper, WRAP have been working with the Thomas Cook Group procurement teams to look at ways of incorporating more recycled paper into our products.
The Carbon Trust: An independent company funded by Government to help the UK move towards a low carbon economy, The Carbon Trust is working with The Thomas Cook Group to help turn opportunities for energy saving into real world reductions in energy consumption, carbon emissions and operating costs.
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office: Thomas Cook Group is partner in the Know Before you Go campaign – a travel safety campaign run by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO). It encourages British nationals to be better prepared for their overseas trips with a view to avoiding common travelling traumas, risks and dangers. The Variety Club:As part of our wider charity policy, Thomas Cook also continues to support The Variety Club. In 2005, Thomas Cook pledged to raise £2m towards the refurbishment of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in the Variety Club Children's Hospital within London’s Kings College Hospital. The Variety Club helps to improve the lives of sick, disabled and disadvantaged children across the UK and the new centre will provide the best possible care for seriously ill children. The unit was officially opened in May 2008.
In the UK and around the world, staff have been running marathons, organising celebrity golf days (Cyprus), quiz nights (Egypt), sketch and dance cabarets for customers (Zante), sponsored walks (Argyll), gambling events (Fakenham), not to mention sky diving, snail racing, weekly weigh ins and a World Cup theme day!
Sail4Cancer:Since 2005 Neilson Active Holidays, has worked with Sail4Cancer, a charity set up by sailing enthusiasts who have lost friends or relatives to cancer. Using the sport to raise funds for treatment and research, Sail4Cancer also provides patients with opportunities to enjoy the time on the water. Neilson helps arrange and fund Beachplus holidays for cancer patients and their families – contributing increasing amounts through deductions from its margin. Its employees have also raised funds at home and abroad through quizzes, dodgeball tournaments, beach volleyball, sweepstakes and an inter-resort ‘Swim The Channel’ marathon in hotel pools. Neilson is also working with Sail4Cancer to help raise awareness of skin cancer across the sailing community in 2008.
