Spanish island life doesn’t get any better than this. Stunning scenery, blissful beaches and captivating resorts – a holiday to the Balearic Islands has all this to offer and a great deal more besides.
The myriad of charms of the Balearic Islands – lying off the eastern coast of the Spanish mainland – are irresistible. Life on the islands of Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza is as laid back or active, hedonistic or cultural as you care to make it. For these islands are gems where the beaches are soft, golden and plentiful, where first class modern resorts jumble alongside delightful unspoilt villages and where you can dance under the stars, wander through mandarin groves and explore spectacular mountain scenery.
Formentera is the more understated of the four, and has managed to escape the holidaying hoards, offering a rare chance of a day’s retreat into silence. The larger islands are mostly known for attracting tourists that party all night and sunbathe all day, but each has its own distinct sights and varied coastal resorts. For example, an exploration to the northern coast of Majorca reveals stylish hill towns and jagged mountains.
By and large, good value, lively towns and family friendly resorts that ensure that these islands have their place in the sun.
The Port of Alcudia is partially pedestrianised, making it an ideal place to sit back and soak up the sun and the scenery of the splendid boats in the luxurious marina.
A lesser-known gem in Menorca, Biniancolla is a charming place found in the Sant Luis in the south of the island.
A small town on the south east corner of Menorca, Biniatap de Dalt. Easy to visit in an afternoon, it is close to the coastline and a handful of other small towns.
Cala Millor is the biggest resort on the East coast of Majorca. There is a wide choice of hotels and restaurants, and a dreamy 6km stretch of golden sand beach sheltered by two unspoilt headlands.
Despite being only 20 minutes from Palma and the airport, Calvia is a charming town. Peaceful and quiet, it is surrounded by spectacular scenery. It also has plenty of modern amenities.
An idyllic destination, Ca’n Picafort boasts a 13km horseshoe-shaped bay of sparkling waters and sugary sands. Originally a fishing village, a bubbling town has developed around the harbour and along the promenade.
