Mexico is flanked by the huge sweep of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean on its western side. Cancun and the Riviera Maya form a strip on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula – a large tongue of land on the Caribbean coast of Mexico. The area’s high concentration of spectacular beaches and Mayan sites makes it extremely popular. Cancun is without doubt the holidaymakers’ Mecca, but the long string of much smaller and quieter resorts stretching south (known as the Riviera Maya) are gaining in popularity.

Spanish is spoken throughout the country, although many people are unaware that more than 50 native Indian languages are also in use. In tourist areas, English is widely spoken, but a little Spanish goes a long way.
