Self catering holidays Tenerife

Tenerife resorts are well placed as they enjoy year round sunshine. This, together with the various attractions and fantastic local cuisine, make the island the perfect destination for a self-catering holiday.

Canarian cuisine is always unpretentious and fresh local produce makes it very appetising. Restaurants described as típico generally offer a chance to try regional cooking, often in pleasant, rustic surroundings. One of the local local curiosities is gofio, or toasted cereal meal, which has been eaten in the Canaries since prehistoric times.

In the 16th century, Tenerife’s wines were made with a type of grape known as the sweet Malvasia grape but now they are produced in a range of classic European styles. Ron (rum) is often mixed with cola to make the classic Hispanic cocktail called a cuba libre.

Besides the Canarian cuisine and the local drinks, Tenerife has a lot more to offer. Throughout the summer months, romerías (country festivals with a religious pilgrimage theme) take place in various locations. The biggest event by far, and a good enough reason to book your holiday so that you can attend, is Santa Cruz’s huge Shrovetide Carnival.

It can sometimes be quite windy in the Canaries, but generally, the mild, sunny climate provides for various outdoor activities.

Atogo, found on the southern tip of the island, is part of Santa Cruz province of Tenerife. It is located next to the airport.
