Self catering holidays Benidorm

Benidorm is packed with restaurants serving British food for a taste of home and on a self-catering holiday, it is also worth seeking out the authentic Spanish restaurants serving regional specialities. These range from tasty tapas to paella and other rice dishes, which are the specialities of this region. Fresh fish and seafood, grilled meats and cured hams are other good bets, as are fresh salads and vegetables. The menu del dia (menu of the day) is generally good value, with two courses, dessert, bread and often wine included.

Try TexMex Mar on Pasaje La Gavina 14. A rusty wooden cart and rattan canopy mark this lively cantina, just off the Levante beach. Inside are bright murals on the walls and long wooden tables, where spicy-hot Mexican-style dishes are served, from nachos and guacamole, to tacos, fajitas and burritos.

The Magic Roundabout (Calle Ibiza) is one of the better places to get good British fare. BBQ spare ribs are a speciality and the steaks are excellent too. Sunday lunch with all the trimmings is highly popular, so book ahead.

The Cuevas de Canelobre is a popular tourist destination. This ornate cavern is estimated to be around seven million years old! You could stop off on the way back for dinner at the family-run Mesón Restaurante which specialises in paella, chargrilled meats and conejo al ajillo (garlic rabbit). El Tapeo Andaluz is an authentic Spanish eatery and is a whirl of frenetic activity at lunchtime, with an excellent menú del día and plenty of traditional dishes.
