As you go deeper inland, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic and mountainous. These highlands, known as the Tell Arabic, or ‘hill’, are where many of Tunisia’s most spectacular Roman ruins can be found.

Should you wish to leave the beach, you are well placed for inland excursions to some fascinating villages. For more adventurous travellers, camel treks and safaris with four-wheel-drive vehicles can be organised, which take you into the desert to experience the Grand Erg Oriental, which is on the edge of the African Sahara.

The cuisine in Tunisia uses all the typically Mediterranean ingredients, such as olive oil, spices, tomatoes and seafood, though unlike other Northern African countries the food can be quite spicy. Harrisa, a hot red pepper and ginger sauce mixed with coriander and cumin, is the flavor of choice.
