Beach holidays Crete

Crete is the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands and is one of the most popular beach holiday destinations in Greece, with a selection of holiday resorts, superb beaches and picturesque villages.

The largest and most lovely beach is to the west and is simply called Sandy Beach. It is wide and equipped with a huge host of facilities, while the reliable winds make it an excellent spot for windsurfing.

There is a whole range of watersports activities available across the island’s coastline, along the shore between Platanias and Chania and on the main beach of Hersonissos. In Stalis you will find opportunities for sky-riding, paragliding and great watersports. You can explore life beneath the waves, either by scuba diving or on a glass-bottom boat tour in Chania or Aghios Nikolaos, where divers can discover that Chania is as beautiful below the water as it is above. One of the many diving centers, Blue Adventures Diving, caters for novice as well as for more experienced divers.

During your beach holiday, venture into a traditional taverna away from tourist areas and you will find a whole range of Cretan specialities, such as staka (melted cheese mopped up with bread) or dakos (rusk-type bread sprinkled with olive oil, cheese and tomato).

Kalivai

A picturesque village on the sea-front in Crete, Kalivai is typically Cretan. A beautiful mix of bright purple bougainvillea and white washed houses, it is located on the north-west coast of the island. Home to some castle ruins, it has a rich history.
