Cancún is divided into two areas: the Hotel Zone around the lagoon; and Cancún City (also known simply as ‘downtown’). A beach lover’s dream, the Hotel Zone is one long beach, with the lagoon on one side. The downtown area offers visitors a change from the beachfront Hotel Zone, with bustling markets, buzzing bars where mariachi bands play, and some great restaurants and shops. It is simply a paradise, especially if you are on an all inclusive holiday and have enough time to explore and enjoy all the activities Cancun has to offer.
Towards the south end of the Hotel Zone are the ruins of El Rey (The King). The site takes its name from a skeleton uncovered there, which was thought to possibly be a former Mayan king. At the southern tip of the Hotel Zone is Parque Nizuc, home to the Wet’n Wild Water Park and the ocean-fronted Atlantida, where you can learn all about bottlenose dolphins, before taking a 30-minute swim with them in a sea enclosure.
Cancún is a fishing paradise with barracuda, sailfish, marlin and tuna all on offer. The waters around Cancún offer amazing opportunities for experienced divers but even amateurs will have fun snorkelling.
Cancún lives to party. Terrasta reggae bar, Coco Bongo, La Boom and Dady’O are the most popular bars here, but if it’s all about the music, then The City is the place. Mambo Café features live music and steamy dance routines including salsa, merengue and samba.
