Holidays Lesbos

An island brimming with ancient history and stark natural beauty, Lesbos is known as the “Emerald Island”. The third largest of the Greek islands, it is found in the north east corner of the Aegean Sea.

Refreshingly free from package tourism, the island has a rugged landscape. Two wide gulfs that extend almost to the core of the island contribute to the impressive 230 miles of coastline while inland, volcanic craters, wetlands and rocky hillsides are surrounded by over 11 million olive trees.

The area is rich in flora and fauna. Home to over 279 species of bird, the landscape features some impressive sites. The unique “Petrified Forest” is one of the most important natural heritage monuments in the world. An expanse of fossilised forest – plants that have been literally frozen-in-time – it is more than 20 million years old. The therapeutic hot springs also attract a steady stream of visitors.

Lesbos is the birthplace of artistic genius. It has been home to some of history’s cultural greats and intellectual legends, ranging from Sappho, one of Greece’s greatest ancient poets, to the famed ancient philosophers of Aristotle and Epicurus. The island is also scattered with archaeological sites and its capital Mytilene, an important port in ancient times, was founded in the 11th century BC.

The main producer of ouzo, a typically Greek tipple served at every opportunity, and a producer of exquisite olive oil, it is a great place to experience authentic Greece.
