Playa del Carmen Holidays

An area that has exploded in size recently, Playa del Carmen has become the third largest city in Quintana Roo, a state on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. A long stretch of powdery sand coastline that is home to kaleidoscopic coral reefs and luxurious resorts, the area known is “The Mexican Caribbean”.

Slightly more sedate than its party-centric neighbour Cancún, Playa del Carmen is laid-back, cosmopolitan and chic. Home to an eclectic mix of sophisticated cuisine and pavement cafes, designer boutiques and market stalls, all-inclusive resorts and luxurious retreats, it is a magnet for the stylish and glamorous and a key stop for cruise ships.

Turquoise waters and white sands draw many to the beach, where they spend long, lazy days soaking up the sun and sipping on cocktails. More active holidaymakers can organise fishing trips directly from the main marina, or go scuba-diving to explore the colourful marine life more closely. Trips to explore the underwater caves at the Hidden World Cenotes are also popular.

Those willing to explore a little further can discover the Mayan ruins nearby or try a round of golf at the Cozumel Country Club – a course home to crocodile and blue crabs, swim with dolphins at the Xel-Ha nature park or gallop along the beaches on horse-back from Rancho Punta Venado.
