Mombasa Holidays

Bordering the Indian Ocean, on the Eastern coastline of Kenya, Mombasa has seen waves of different cultures overlap its shores. It’s a major port, which has been used by Portuguese, Indian, Persian, and Arab traders and each nation has left its mark on the landscape, architecture and cuisine.

The wonderful white sand beaches and resorts along the coast make Mombasa a favourite destination for travellers looking for sunshine and relaxation. The coastal plains stretch from the north through the town of Lamu, with Malindi and Watamu, further south. Snorkelling, water skiing and surfing are all popular activities and deep sea fishing excursions are a particular highlight. Mtwapa Creek on the north coast is well worth a visit. The Indian Ocean inlet has small marinas and beautiful tropical vegetation. It’s famous for bird watching, mountain bike tours and is a departure point for deep sea fishing excursions. The coast maintains tropical temperatures of up to 32 degrees centigrade throughout the year, so resting in the lush gardens and swimming pools of hotel resorts is a pleasant way to keep cool.

The magnificent wildlife of Kenya is no secret. Safaris depart from Mombasa, taking you to local sanctuaries where you can spot an amazing array of animals from elephants to buffalo. In 1952 Queen Elizabeth visited Mombasa before going on her own safari. To commemorate her visit the city created The Mombassa Tusks which still stand today, creating a large archway which resembles an ‘M’. It’s a great spot for photographs.
