Gurdalavaca is a resort situated in the province of Holguin in the Republic of Cuba. It is found on the north-eastern coast of the island. It, as well as the entire country, enjoys an all-year-round tropical climate and is probably the best place to have a really relaxing and pleasurable vacation. The beaches in Guardalavaca are one of the most picturesque in the world. When there, everyone can see how the soft whiteness of the sands connects and hides below the aquamarine waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It is also one of the first places where Christopher Columbus set foot after discovering the existence of the Cuban archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The Cubans are a very artistic, musical and fun-loving nation. It shows in everything they do, because it just seems that whatever it is that they take on, it becomes a work of art. Everything in the city proves this - from the hotels’ interior and exterior to the beach’s arrangement. Their artistic abilities are shown even in the very name of the town - Guardalavaca in Spanish means literally ‘guard the cows’. There are many legends about why the city is called like this. One of them is that it is so because of the fact that the pirates of the region used to guard their loot (also called ‘vaca’) on the beaches of this island. Another one, which is much more believable, is that this was what the locals cried when they were being invaded by the buccaneers. Actually, there are many things that can suggest the existence of the sea criminals in the past of this Caribbean resort, a little walk through the less populated areas might turn out to be a real archaeological feast.

One of the best places to spend your time while on holiday in Guardalavaca is the beach, but there are many other things to do and places to go! The souvenir market is definitely a place for the tourists - diversity, exciting local handcrafts and beautiful figurines can all be found here. Anything from Che Guevara t-shirts to coral keychains to expensive local jewellery can be bought from the many private or business stalls in the area. Most of the local hotels offer beach bars that serve light drinks and snacks to the guests as well as free lounging chairs. Together with the various sports that one can engulf in during their stay in the town, this makes a perfect getaway from the busy everyday life of the big, dusty city. Scuba-diving, swimming with dolphins and various hiking paths are some of the other things everyone can enjoy during their stay in Guardalavaca. There are separate water sports available for the visitors provided by both the city and the individual hotels.

Although the city of Guardalavaca is not the capital, this is one of the best places in the country, if not the hemisphere, that one can sit down and relax, enjoying a beautiful day at the beach, tanning, reading a book or cuddling with their loved ones. The peaceful atmosphere is aided by the incredibly preserved natural surroundings and the fact that there is strict boarder between the hotel and restaurants’ zone and the beaches, the swimming areas and the hiking spots. This is definitely the best place for lovers of both peaceful vacations and the ones that are up for a beautiful underwater trip in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.
