Elounda Holidays

A small town on the north coast of Crete, Elounda has been transformed from a simple fishing village to a magnet for chic and glamorous holidaymakers.

Though quieter than neighbouring holiday hotspot Agios Nikolaos, Elounda features a range of high quality accommodation. The first exclusive resort was established in the 1960s, setting a high standard for hotels. Many of the resorts have private beaches with extensive facilities and water-sports.

However, though a popular, upmarket holiday location, the town has retained its authentic charm. A picturesque town, the harbour is formed of a natural lagoon – the Gulf of Korfos – and is fronted by the island of Spinalonga.

The town has a rich heritage. Occupied successively by the Minoans, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Ottoman empires, it has an eclectic past. The town features two spectacular archaeological sites: the relics of Olous, an ancient sunken city, and a Venetian fortress on the island of Spinalonga. The sleepy unspoilt village of Plaka is also only a couple of kilometres away.
