Getting Around

By microbus: Blue-and-white microbuses ply the route between Sharm El Sheikh town and Naama Bay with a cheap, regular service. Buses have fixed routes but not fixed stops, so call out when you want to stop.

By taxi: If you’re taking a taxi, ensure you negotiate a price in advance (the meter is rarely used) and ensure the driver knows it’s Egyptian pounds. Pay only when you reach your destination – especially if you’re travelling from the airport into town – and try and have exact change.

By shuttle bus: Many hotels have their own shuttle buses to the main centres during the day and evening.

Events

Camel festival: Look out in May when the ‘ships of the desert’ come to town! The South Sinai Camel Festival sees a tribal gathering from around Egypt, with humped-back beasts taking part in spectacular 10-mile-long camel races.

For shopaholics: In July, buying souvenirs is even more important during the International Shopping and Tourism Festival, when local businesses are promoted.

Religious festivals: Be aware of the religious festivals which may affect the area; Ramadan is the month-long period of dawn-to-dusk fasting – the date of which moves back 10 days each year. At the end of that, the Eid ul-Fitr celebrations are a time when families travel on holiday, and Sharm El Sheikh gets busy.
