Adelaide Attractions and Tours
As one of the earlier Australian cities to be settled, Adelaide retains some of its colonial architecture. With a vibrant arts scene and great shopping, it's more than enough to keep you entertained. However, Adelaide is possibly best-known as a gourmet city and it abounds with restaurants. Why not take a tour of the markets with a local food expert to experience the best it has to offer. Also, whilst you're so close, a trip to a winery is a must. The hills around Adelaide are well-known for their excellent wines.
Barossa Valley Tours
One of the world's most famous wine growing regions, the Barossa Valley is home to the Jacob's Creek vineyards. However, this is not the only top brand on offer. A tour through the towns and villages of the Barossa not only offers wine sampling, but also great views.
Kangaroo Island Tours
Although named after its wild kangaroos, this lovely island is a haven of wildlife. From wallabies to kookaburras, sea lions to echidnas, platypus to possums, they all live here. Keep your eyes peeled as you're going along and you could just spot some wild koalas in the trees.
McLaren Vale Food & Wine Tour
Alice Springs Attractions and Tours
Located slap bang in the middle of the country, Alice Springs is a long way from anywhere and it feels like it. But that's part of its charm. Although not strictly an Outback town, it does have a more countrified feel to it than other Australian cities. Alice Springs is home to the original Flying Doctors, who covered a vast area of the Outback from here, and it has a river that you can stand in the middle of without so much as getting a toe wet. However, it's perhaps best known for its proximity (in Australian terms!) to Ayers Rock or Uluru.
Australia Zoo
Although Steve Irwin is no longer with us to see how his zoo has moved on, his legacy is still undeniably etched into its ethos. For Steve getting close to wildlife was fun, and fun certainly abounds at Australia Zoo. There are crocodiles galore and plenty of animal shows.
Cuddle a Koala at Lone Pine
Queensland is the only state where you can actually hold a koala. Opinions are mixed on this, but if you do decide to do it, you'll be face to face with one of the world's cutest animals. Even if not, the park is worth visiting for its wealth of koalas and other native Aussie animals.
Cairns Attractions and Tours
Cairns is a relatively small city on Queensland's northern coast, so there's not a huge amount to see in the city itself other than the fabulous Cairns Tropical Zoo. But its location is ideal as a base for day trips to the surrounding area. Having one of the nearest harbours to the Great Barrier Reef, it is a starting point for various cruises and snorkelling trips. Lovely Kuranda overlooks it, fashionable Port Douglas is just down the road, and the lush Daintree and Cape Tribulation peninsula are easily reachable within a day.
Cairns Tropical Zoo
At Cairns Tropical Zoo you'll get to meet many of Australia's native animals including wombats, saltwater crocodiles, kangaroos, dingos and koalas – you could even cuddle one (koala that is!). You can even see what the animals get up to after dark at the Night Zoo.
Kuranda Tour
A delightful village set high in the tropical rainforest, Kuranda is reached via a scenic railway that circles the mountain. After time in the village, you'll descend by Skyrail cablecar, then visit the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park where you can have a go at throwing a boomerang.
Great Barrier Reef & Rainforest
Darwin Attractions and Tours
Set on the northern coast of Australia, almost 2000 miles from Sydney, Darwin is a relaxed city with tropical surroundings. Often missed off Australian tour itineraries, it benefits from being less touristy than other cities and has a unique feel to it. Even if you're only staying for a few days, take time to explore the city and pick up some bargains in the shops. As well as having its own attractions, Darwin is also close to Kakadu and Litchfield National Park, havens of unspoilt nature and home to centuries-old Aboriginal culture.
Darwin City Tour
A Darwin city tour is a great way to get to know it, taking in highlights such as The Esplanade, Mindil Beach market, Centennial Park, St Mary's Cathedral and the Botanical Gardens, amongst other attractions. It's a small city, so you'll soon discover its character.
Jumping Crocodiles Tour
This Adelaide River cruise is in Aboriginal territory, just outside Darwin. Saltwater crocodiles are one of the world's most dangerous creatures and you'll see them close up. But don't worry, your guide will have plenty of food to keep them happy as they jump out of the river.
Melbourne Attractions and Tours
As you would expect from Australia's second largest city, there are a wealth of Melbourne tours and attractions to choose from. To name just a few that you can book with Thomas Cook and Keith Prowse: Neighbours Tours, Melbourne Aquarium, Melbourne city tours (including a hot air balloon ride), Puffing Billy train trip into the Dandenongs, Sovereign Hill gold-mining town and Healesville Animal Sanctuary. To get the most out of your stay why not buy the See Melbourne and Beyond card, including entry to all of the above and more.
Yarra Valley Wine Tours
The Yarra Valley is to Melbourne what the Barossa Valley is to Adelaide. There are a variety of Yarra Valley tours that you can take, visiting some of the top vineyards and sampling their wines. You can even take a hot air balloon ride over the valley for a bird's eye view.
Great Ocean Road Tour
The Great Ocean Road is undeniably one of Australia's best drives, but it covers a very long distance, so why not let someone else do the driving and go on an overnight tour? Highlights include the Otways forest, the Shipwreck coast and the famous 12 Apostles.
Perth Attractions and Tours
Boasting the most days of sunshine in the country, Perth in Western Australia is a laidback city with a happy-go-lucky atmosphere. However, it is quite spread out, so going on one of the Perth city tours is a good way to save your legs. From Perth you can also take day trips and overnight tours to top Western Australia attractions such as the Valley of the Giants treetop walk, Wave Rock, Albany, the Swan Valley, so make sure that you leave enough time to fit them all in, otherwise you'd be missing a lot of what this state has to offer.
Perth and Fremantle Tour
While Perth is a big, modern city, Fremantle is a colonial-era town, but both have attractions worth exploring. This tour combines a spot of sightseeing in both, followed by a cruise back along the Swan River (though you can make your own way back if preferred).
Pinnacles Tours
The Pinnacles are eerie, other-worldly rock formations that rise up out of the ground and stretch as far as the eye can see. This tour also takes you to go sandboarding and to see koalas en route. There is also a 3-day tour that also sees the Monkey Mia dolphins.
