Planning your visit

Washington DC, the nation's capital is a fascinating city with green parks, wide tree-lined streets and very few skyscrapers, all of which give it a European feel. So much American history is crammed into the city with it's wealth of monuments, public buildings, museums and memorials to past heroes that visitors cannot fail to be impressed and what's more - almost every attraction is free. For nearly two hundred years, the White House has been the residence and office of the US President. An Irish immigrant called James Hoban modeled it on Georgian mansions in Dublin and the building was burned down during the war with the British in 1812. It was rebuilt so hurriedly that the building was in danger of collapsing and in 1948 President Trueman was forced to leave The White House for four years while a supporting steel frame was inserted in the building. The National Mall is home to many of the city's monuments and institutions including the US Capital, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Join a one-hour guided tour of the Federal Bureau of Investigation including crime laboratories before going to Arlington Cemetary which is the resting place of John F Kennedy. Washington offers visitors plenty of choice for dining from Italian and American to Thai and Chinese, and from waterfront restaurants to sidewalk cafes. For a selection of trendy restaurants and bars Georgetown is well worth a visit. The main museums also have cafes, which are a good option for lunch breaks.
