Big, bold and brash - the 'Big Apple' must surely be the world's most dynamic city.
Everything here seems larger than life whether you're sightseeing, shopping, dining or burning
the midnight oil.
Getting around
New York's subway is fast, extensive, air-conditioned and cheap. It's much safer than it's
reputed to be, although it's still best avoided at night.
Must sees
Most of New York's attractions are on Manhattan Island. These include the Statue of Liberty
(the symbol of America) and the Empire State Building from where you can enjoy fantastic views
of the city. There are numerous museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is home
to more than two million art treasures and is the largest museum in the Western hemisphere.
Ring the changes with a stroll in Central Park, a vast urban garden. Nightlife is non-stop and
diverse, ranging from jazz clubs to cocktail bars.
Must buys
New York is a shopaholic's dream. Shops on Madison Avenue and nearby Fifth Avenue are a mecca
for the label-conscious. For bargains, head to the lower East Side and Greenwich Village.
Must tries
Ethnic restaurants, hamburger bars and pizzerias all have their place here, but if you want to
try eating New York style, do as the New Yorkers do and stop by the famous Carnegie Deli for a
giant sandwich.
