Tenerife Holidays

Tenerife Holidays

The largest of Spain's Canary Islands, Tenerife is an island of two halves. To the north is a sub-tropical region full of lush greenery with black volcanic sandy beaches; to the south, a series of golden sandy beach resorts. In the centre of the island lies Mount Teide, a volcano well worth a visit for its lunar-like crater landscape.

Tenerife Holiday Resorts

Actually there are many aspects to holidays to Tenerife. There are a good number of well-established resorts dotted around the coast; the southern resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa De Las Americas are by far the most popular, whereas Puerto De La Cruz towards the north of the island retains something of a more exclusive feel.

Tenerife Landscapes

Tenerife is also a unique island in terms of geography; right in the middle of the island is Mount Teide, a genuine volcanic peak (though it’s activity has been minimal for many decades) that overlooks all and can be seen from virtually anywhere on the island. It’s a stunning sight, but its true beauty is revealed when you venture up the winding roads through Tenerife’s pine forests and emerge beyond the treeline to find a huge and spectacular volcanic crater that is so stark and seemingly lifeless that it could almost be a Martian landscape.

Tenerife Weather and Environment

It’s the physical location of Mount Teide that gives Tenerife its unique weather system. Trade winds prevail from the southwest to give the southern half of the island an arid, weather-beaten look, whilst Teide’s height protects the north of the island which enjoys a lush sub-tropical climate. Another wonderful anomaly on the island is the golden sands of the south Tenerife resorts; all this sand has been imported from the Sahara Desert because local authorities felt the natural black sand encircling Tenerife wasn’t as marketable. Thankfully northern resorts such as Puerto De La Cruz opted to keep their natural volcanic sands.
