Great family holiday in Portaventure - but very unimpressed with the El Paso Hotel - definitely not a 4 Star!! Recently returned from a week's stay in the El Paso Hotel. The Hotel is definitely not a 4 Star hotel - on arrival the reception and lobby area are very impressive, the mexican decor was beautiful, surrounding garden areas and pool were beautiful but for us the rooms and the restaurant food really let us down, we have stayed in 4Star hotels before so we were expecting a little bit more than, chips, burgers, hot dogs and cold pasta every night (this was the type of food on offer at lunchtime both in the buffet restaurant and at the pool!!!# The rooms have a very, very small balcony #really a small ledge with black railings on!!), we missed having a balcony as we like to sit outside together, taking it easy and chatting - the room had had a double bed and a camp bed for my son - who is 12 years old, not a small child - we paid quite a lot of money for this hotel and I was shocked that my son was expected to sleep on a campbed for a week. The rooms could really be doing with some refurbishment and TLC, esp. the bathroom - but were very clean with clean towels provided every day. The hotel location to the Portaventure Park was super, we thoroughly enjoyed our days and nights at the park but felt we weren't getting value for money in our all inclusive package. The staff were very helpful and pleasant even though the bar and restaurant areas were very busy as this was July - queuing for for food that was below average was torturous- sometimes the queues were the length of the restaurant - I think the El Paso should have separate buffet areas for children and another for adults with better quality food!! The serving areas at the buffet were either too high or too wide for small children to reach the food to put on their plates, this added to the waiting. Also if they are insisting the all inclusive drinks end at 11.30 pm they should offer an alternative option to 'buy' drinks after that time. I am not sure if I would recommend the hotel to anyone for these reasons, but I would definitely return to Portaventura - what a fantastic theme park!!! Tip for anyone thinking about booking the El Paso Hotel - request a room in the main hotel building as you will get wifi access in your room!! July 30, 2014
So many opportunities missed We stayed 25 May to 01 June, two families of four travelling together. Pro's - Beautiful hotel, spotlessly clean, staff are hardworking, lots of choice for food (but quite repetative), gorgeous pool area, cleaning staff always on top of rubbish so no insect issues. Rooms cleaned daily and maids friendly. All inclusive food around the pool was great, most people who stayed at the hotel during the day ate here rather than the buffet restaurant as it was more than adequate. Theme park is excellent, they really have got that part right. The all inclusive food facility in the park is good and plentiful, was really impressed with this. Con's - Rooms, beds are rock hard, not comfy at all. Shower sprayed water all over bathroom if even put on a moderate speed as shower screen not big enough. This a big hotel so buffet restaurant can get very busy and queues form regularly, especially when the parties of spanish school children are ready to eat. Evening entertainment is woeful and is only outside, only lasted 45 mins on our last night (Saturday). Not enough indoor seating for size of hotel. 500 rooms and main bar seats only 32 inside, plenty of outdoor seating though but weather wasn't very warm in the evenings the week we were there. The all inclusive drinks situation was a big pain. Only available at the pool bar during the day even when it was raining and no-one there. The outside bar near the hotel only opened at 6.30 when the pool bar closed. Bars shut at 11.30pm prompt without option to purchase drinks afterwards. The A la Carte restaurant wasn't very good, service very slow. It seems that this hotel is just a bolt on to the theme park and not really interested in being any type of resort in itself, which due to it's size it should be. In short, if all you are interested in is spending all day every day at the Portaventura theme park and coming back to the hotel at night to get some sleep, then this place is for you (if you like a hard bed). But if you want a bit more from your holiday than just PortAventura alone, you'd be better off getting a hotel with much better facilities down in Salou or Cambrils and just paying for park entry when you want to go June 10, 2014
Pass on hotel El Paso After a flight delay, we arrived at the Hotel El Paso, be prepared to wait a significant amount of time to check-in. Some people on our coach were still queuing to check in two hours after being dropped off. The hotel sells itself as a child friendly hotel, we would disagree with this, apart from the pool which we couldn't use for three days due to rain, (on the last 2 days when we could use it the water sprayers on the pirate ship were taped off and out of use, so our 5 year old was distraught to say the least) there is nothing else for children to do here, kids club was closed for the entire half term week, no daytime activities, entertainment in the evening was limited or non-existent. And at night all it consisted of was a couple of dancing sesame street characters, which were on for less than an hour, by 10pm everything was over and in darkness, not what you want on holiday. The rep said several times that all our entertainment was in the theme park, however, when that closes at 6/7pm as it did on each night of our stay, what are you supposed to do beyond that time?? No WiFi in any of the rooms, apart from reception area, so as you can imagine during the 3 days of rain this area was rammed. One thing we really weren't happy with were the amount of school party trips staying in this hotel, it really spoilt our stay as on at least 3 days we were overrun with 3/4 school trips, consisting of 60 children or more in each group!!! So you can imagine the All inclusive buffet at dinnertime with all of these children in, it was like a school canteen and the noise was horrendous. Not what you expect from a family hotel and something we have never experienced before. They just took over any amenities that were available on the days they were there. Certainly would not stay here again!! June 7, 2014
Great family holiday in Spain The main attraction of this hotel was the proximity and access to the fantastic Portaventura theme park. The hotel is a clean, well run establishment though admittedly it could do with some TLC. The rooms at the hotel were adequate for our needs which were a place to sleep and to get out of the early afternoon heat with good air con. However, compared with rooms at other 4 star properties, the ones at the Hotel El Paso fall short. Very small balcony, no fridge, etc. The communal areas are well staffed with a good level of service provided - though you should note that the bars close as soon as the theme park shuts (i.e. 11.30pm or midnight). The food is of a good standard and caters for all - though the al a carte restaurant again doesn't meet the same heights as other similar properties (though it was nice to be waited on at a table rather than collect from the buffet). The pool is clean though the cannons on the pirate ship need a little work done to them as only 2 were operable (out of 4) by the time we departed. Evening entertainment was fine though aimed at younger children (which suited us with a 4 yr old son). As mentioned the theme park and water park are the main reason we chose this hotel - the theme park is excellent and we would recommend the fast pass if you love to go on the rides (maximum waiting time was 10 mins compared with queues in excess of an 1hr on most of the larger rises). The water park was also excellent (though very busy) - this is not icnluded in the package though guest at the Hotel El Paso receive a 30% discount from the walk-up price. Overall, I would rate the hotel facilities at 3* though with the access to the parks the holiday as 5*. September 1, 2013
Fantastic family holiday!!!!! I stayed at this hotel with my husband and 8 year old daughter in July 2012. I thought this holiday was fantastic. My daughter loved it and is eager to go back next year as are we. I would really recommend this holiday. The fact that you have unlimited access to Portaventura theme park is excellent. We went to see the parade on our last night and it was out of this world. The queues are not as bad as we thought, although I would recommend going later in the day if you are staying nearby as it is quieter and lot cooler. The hotel was lovely and good choice of food, also drink, ice creams s etc for the whole family which were included, we were situated near the pool which was great. All in an excellent family holiday. October 24, 2012
Great Holiday portaventura! Overall was a great holiday, we had free passes to theme park and aqua park, great fun. The only down side was evening entertainment my kids are 7,9 so mini disco not cool anymore, also family entertainment very repetative bearing in mind we were only staying a week. Food was good lots to choose from. Would recommend this holiday. October 12, 2012
Fantastic family resort There is so much to do at Port Aventura that there was never a dull moment. Amazing rides and shows. The water park was brilliant. The hotel facilities were excellent (pool, restaurant and bar). The food was lovely but if I was going to be very picky I would say that there were only 3 restaurants in the park which served food as part of the all inclusive package. This was a little bit inconvenient because when it came to getting drinks for the children we were usually a distance away and they did not serve light snacks (only set 3 courses with little choice for vegetarians). The entertainment at the hotel was ok but repetitive, we were fed up of seeing the same people doing the same acts but saying that it was a bit of a relief because we were so busy during the day it was good to call it a night early. This is excellent value for money and I would recommend it 100% if you love being on the go, doing theme and water parks and seeing shows etc. We absolutely loved it and after 2 weeks still didn't want to come home.
