Why Go
With sunshine for 340 days a year, and an average temperature of 22C, the resort of Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria is a popular choice for sun-seeking Brits. In fact, it's the hottest resort on Gran Canaria's south coast, and offers a busy marina, two gloriously sandy beaches – one of which is very popular with watersports fans – and plenty of international restaurants and bars. There are three large shopping centres as well as quaint market stalls to cater for all your shopping needs.
Puerto Rico is a great place to amble round, as it climbs steeply up the sides of the hills that surround it, so some areas may not be suitable for those who'll find the hike a challenge. Down towards the picturesque harbour there's a tidy promenade with bars and cafes and, when the sun goes down, there are two commercial centres offering everything from karaoke to curry. The resort is beautifully maintained, with clean streets and well-tended green areas.
Transfer time to Puerto Rico by airport coach or taxi is just over an hour. Puerto Rico is very close to Gran Canarias's many tourist attractions, including a couple of water parks, zoos and botanical gardens, making it ideal for family holidays to the Canary Islands.
