Why Go
The picturesque fishing port of Puerto de Mogan is a purpose-built dream, happily sitting alongside a lovely, traditional Canarian village. Bustling and busy, it's still an easy going environment, largely pedestrianised, where pastel coloured, harbour-side houses line streets laced with bridges, trim gardens and flower-filled window boxes. The area around the winding promenade, with its labyrinth of water and pathway, marina and canal (actually sea water channels), is known as 'Little Venice' and, while it may be short on Renaissance treasures, you can see what they mean: this is a romantic, well-thought out development.
And it's one that's learned from the mistakes made in other, larger, resorts, and got the mix of accommodation, bars, restaurants and pleasing areas to stroll just about spot on. It's particularly suited for families and more mature travellers seeking a beautiful, self-contained community basking in the Canarian sunshine, and is a good indication of the way holidays in Gran Canaria are heading. More subtlety, more space to stretch out and relax, and lots more variety in facilities, accommodation and entertainment. This is still the island to come for a good time, but, these days, good times come in far more flavours. And, yes, that even includes doing absolutely nothing!
