Really lovely island & great hotel
The hotel is ideally positioned in the old town of Funchal. It is right on the sea front & you have views of the cruise ships arriving & departing. The hotel is very friendly & welcoming. Our room was a garden room which had views of the flowers & a glimpse of the sea from the table on the terrace. We will definitely re visit Madeira & will definitely stay at the Porto Santa Maria again when we do.

Great location, nice hotel & helpful staff
Very nice hotel with friendly, helpful staff. Location is great & in my opinion, it's the best area to be based at in Funchal.
Breakfasts are great, with a wide choice & good quality. Snacks at the pool bar are also very good. The location is such that a huge choice of very good local restaurants is literally only 2 minutes from the hotel.
The only areas I could suggest they improve on are to stop charging for the use of the safe in the room - quality hotels tend to provide this as a matter of course, & on WiFi access. Like many hotels, they could do with upgrading to free WiFi in all areas, and not just in the Reception area as at present.
Having said that, we will definitely return to this hotel at some point & I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Great holiday, great hotel, the place to stay in Funchal.
We had a great holiday at the Hotel Porto Santa Maria. The location, standard and ambience of the hotel was excellent and I would recommend it to anyone going to Funchal, particularly if they wanted to be near to town. Within fifty yards of the hotel entrance there were numerous good restaurants and it took less than ten minutes to walk into the centre of town. The hotel staff were friendly and attentive and any minor problems (like replacing a light bulb) were sorted out within minutes of being reported. The TC tour guide was very helpful and gave an excellent introduction. The levada walks were well organised with informative guides and enabled us to see much more of the island and the people than possible by car. Overall, a great way to get away from all the cold and rain of the UK in February.

Great holiday for couples, no children
The hotel was in an excellent location in the old town and was very convenient for town centre.
The room was lovely with a nice harbour view, facilities were excellent as were the staff.
would certainly recommend it and will return later this year.
We were bed & breakfast and immediately outside the hotel were many nice restaurants with good food and reasonable prices.

Great holiday with friens in Funchal
The Hotel was at the far end of the resort which proved to be a good location as it was a 10 minute walk to the main town and we had approx. 15 good restaurants within 500 yards of us.
The hotel was clean, well maintained and staffed in the main by efficient and courteous staff. Because of the wealth of restaurants we only ate one evening in the hotel, the breakfast options on offer were fine but after 5 days we ate out twice due to lack of variety.
I would go back there just for to get to the restaurants we missed.

Wonderful holiday in Madeira.
I have just broken a golden rule for me. I never go back to the same place twice on holiday, but I am returning to Madeira next year to the same hotel because, quite simply, it is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. The location is excellent, very near the old town and directly across from the sea. The food was wonderful, by far the best food I have experienced in a holiday hotel. Last year, we took some meals in the hotel. Next year we are going half board. The staff were very helpful throughout our stay and the hotel was spotlessly clean.

You would have to go a long way to better a hotel as good as this.
As soon as we walked into reception, talk about first impressions, absolutely wonderful. The receptionist was really welcoming, booked us in, sorted our bags out and because we were early and our room was not ready she offered us complimentary lunch outside around the pool and garden area which was so relaxing and chilled and the food was brilliant. When we got to our room we had asked for a sea view and that's exactly what we got stunning!!!! The room was large, plenty of space, a small kitchen area and a lovely bathroom even sweets left on our pillows which were replaced every day. We stayed on a B&B basis and ate out a few times but also self catered from the local supermarket which was cheap and their fresh baked breads are to die for. The old part of Funchal is definitely the place to stay as opposed to the West End where all the hotels are, not for us personally but depends on your preference. We found the area very quite for the time of year (July) and the local restaurants never seemed full, perhaps the sign of the times. The cable car, close to, is a must as is the gardens up the top, well worth a visit. When in Madeira you MUST go on the baskets down the hill, what an experience, and you will have your picture taken on the way down which is waiting for you at the bottom. Lovely souvenir but be warned if you don't want it they get quite stroppy when you refuse. This review only just scratches the surface we had a wonderful holiday, did a lot, saw all the island and have some wonderful memories. We wouldn't go back to Madeira as we like to see and sample different places, but one thing we would like wherever we go in the world would be the standard, the service and the friendliness of the Hotel Porto Santa Maria waiting for us wherever we land.
