Get a feel for the resort

There is so much more to Malta than the glorious sunshine and shimmering Mediterranean. It is an island rich in culture with a history tracing back 6,000 years, from the first Stone Age settlers and the Knights of St. John, to 1942, when the islanders' bravery earned Malta the George Cross. Valletta still shows its turbulent past in the stone bastions that stand guard, while inland lies the `silent city' of Mdina, Malta's beautiful mediaeval walled city. Valletta
Construction of the walled Maltese capital by the Knights of St John was started in 1566 following the Turkish invasion of Malta the previous year. The new city, laid out in a basic grid pattern, was named after Grand Master La Vallette, and soon acquired streets lined with ornate churches and palaces. Largely free of cars, today's Valletta is a joy to discover with its wealth of historical buildings and unusual streets of steps. St. Julian's Bay
Located on the northern coast of Malta and starting out as a small fishing community in the area of Spinola Bay and Balutta Bay, St. Julian's is one of the most popular tourist centres on the island. The area has wide selection of shops, bars and restaurants and the Paceville area of the resort is renowned for its nightlife. The Dragonara peninsula is home to a popular casino, while the newer Portomaso development has brought a different touch of glamour with its yacht marina. St. George's Bay
St George's has a small shopping centre, a multiplex cinema and a charming little sandy cove lapped by the Mediterranean. Marfa Peacefully situated on the north-eastern tip of the island and boasting excellent views of the islands of Comino and Gozo, Marfa is the perfect choice for a relaxing holiday. The Marfa peninsula is dotted with deserted watch-towers constructed in the 17th century to guard against invading corsairs, but today's visitors can hop aboard a ferry from nearby Cirkewwa and sail across the channel to Gozo. Mellieha Bay
The largest sandy beach on the island is a few minutes away by car or one of the regular and inexpensive local buses. The town of Mellieha, bursting with local colour and dominated by its impressive church, is just a little further.
