Lovely holiday, beautifull island.
First holiday on Zakynthos - beautiful island, very friendly people. Alkyes as a resort just right for us - large enough for good choice of tavernas & bars, with pure white sand and clear blue warm sea.
Family owned apartments - pretty basic, which suited us since we were going out most of the time. Family go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and make their own olive oil that I recommend.
Intent to return.

Brilliant holiday in Zante, not good accomodation
We had a great holiday in Alykes Zante. Our flights were fery good but not much leg room.
We stayed at the Pothos studios 6 or 7 years ago and were pleased with our choice. However nothing has changed there in all that time. The rooms badly need updating, new beds as mattresses are lumpy and beds broken and plumbing is poor. Also the cleaning is at a poor standard, a sweet paper was under the bed when we arrived and was still there after 2 weeks when we left.
We also found that return guests were given much more attention.
We would definately return to Alykes it is a lovely quiet resort but would not return to the Potos.

Really enjoyed our stay. We were 3 girls between 21-28 looking for a relaxing holiday with plenty to see and eat, not too bothered about clubbing etc and this was the perfect hotel and resort for us! Rooms are basic (as to be expected), clean, nicely decorated and well maintained. The pool is nice, clean and also well maintained. plently of sun loungers and because Pothos is not surronded by other hotels the sun hits the pool area from sunrise until sunset. Pool bar is nice, good variety of food and freshly cooked (we enjoyed and we can be picky) though no traditional greek food but that is to be expected from a pool bar. The owners Helen, Demitris and Dennis were fantastic hosts, very friendly and welcoming (nothing was too much trouble) and very good at recommending places to go/things to do/restaurants. We found here it was very much the little things that made a big difference and that was the service we received from the owners and their family. The area is beautiful - Pothos backdrop is the mountains and is a 5 minute walk to the beach accross the salt flats, it really does have everything! All terraces/balconys face towards the open country side and mountains.
The area itself is really beautiful, quite a few bars and restaurants but the nightlife isn't much more than that. The beach is incredible, can walk out quite a long way before it gets more than waste deep. There are lots of trips and excersions available, we mostly took the thomas cook ones but there are local ones available also - i would highly recommend taking the "train car" up to the mountains to a taverna/museum, they also do a greek night on a saurday and this was incredible. If you like greek food go to Paradosiako (15min walk from Pothos between Alykes and Alykeness) as it was honestly the best greek food I have ever had!
Overall it was one of the best holidays I have ever been on. I never thought I would be the person who would hang around the hotels pool, i normally prefere to swim in the sea but it was such a great atmasphere we didn't feel the need to go the sea everyday. I also never though I'd be the person who would go back to the same hotel but I deffinately will be be returning to Pothos!

October in the sun
These apartments are not too far from the centre of the village but can seem a bit of a walk in the rain, but it is not as far as you think. Luckily we did not have rain too often in our week there. Only 1 day and it was the last day.
Our apartments was kept clean and tidy. and we always had warm water to shower.
There is a small bar attached to the apartments and the family, especially Dimitris always made us feel very welcome. The bar also served food during the day, which was very handy on the day that it rained, as it meant we did not need to travel far for something to eat. We had a very lovely pizza made by Dennis.
If you like to read then you won't have to carry too many books with you as they free book exchange in the bar, which always gives you an excuse to visit . If you dont find what you are looking for there ,Then there are several other locations around the resort that have this facility too.
If you need any help then dont be afraid to ask, I am sure the Dimtris will try his hardest to help you.
There is a supermarket not to far away but if you wake up and need anything befoer nine, you might need to take the slightly longer walk to the village. You can count this as your early morning exercise.
If you feel the cold easily like me, then I would recommend a light jacket for walking back to the apartments at night. There is sometime a slight wind .
Had a great week and hopefully be back soon.

Just returned from a GREAT 2 weeks at the pothos. The owners and staff are brilliant and will do all they can to ensure you have a fantastic holiday. A small breakfast is terrific value and all the food from the bar is generous and well produced. The pool is so nice to jump into on those hot days and is cleaned regularly. The rooms, especially for Greece, are spacious and cool considering the outside temperature. The rooms are cleaned every day, except Sunday, and you get clean sheets and towels twice a week. The location is perfect for that quiet holiday, with fantastic views yet there are many lovely tavernas and shops (or the beach if you want it) within a 5 minute stroll.
you can even buy your english paper from the pool bar if you need your daily fix of news back home.
The only problem you may have is with thomas Cook. The emergency numbers they gave were incorrect, and you could well be left on your own during the transfers as there are frequently no reps on the coaches.

Fantastic Holiday in Alykes
Alykes is fantastic. The beach and sea are lovley. There are lots of good restaurants and the locals are very friendly. The Pothos apartments are in a very good location and the owners are very friendly and hard working. There is a bare minumum of equipment provided in the apartment. There was only one pan, no frying pan and no toaster.
The food in the bar at the Pothos is excellent and very good value. The standard of the Pothos is very basic, but we had a brilliant time and would definitely go back.

Alykes is a lovely peaceful resort, more suitable for families and mature couples. It is at the oposite end of the spectrum from Laganas. There are loads of lovely retsaurants, and the Greek people have to be one of the friendliest I have found in my travels.
The Pothos has basic Greek type accomodation, but is spotlessly clean, and the owners bend over backwards for their guests to ensure they have a lovely holiday. The rooms are big and airy, and the pool is lovely and clean.
I would not look past Alykes or the Pothos, and will definitely return again.
