This cosmopolitan city of narrow streets and ornate guildhouses is at the heart of European politics and an intriguing place to explore. Bars, restaurants and museums galore cluster around the compact centre.

Getting around

As Brussels is fairly small, the best way to explore is on foot - but take care at pedestrian crossings as Belgian drivers are impatient. Otherwise, there are trams, buses, taxis and the Metro.

Must sees

The Grand'Place, Brussels'central square, is the hub of activity and home to various markets. Perhaps the most impressive building here is the 15th-century Gothic-style Hotel de Ville (town hall), although the opulent guildhouses put up fierce competition. You'll also find the 15th-century Maison du Roi here - rebuilt in the 19th century and now housing the Municipal Museum. The 17th-century bronze statue, the revered Mannekin Pis, always draws the crowds and has over 500 outfits for special occasions. The Place de Palais, noted for its symmetry, is surrounded by 18th-century mansions, while the nearby Palais Royal, complete with throne room and museum, is also worth a visit. Other attractions include the Royal Museum of Fine Art and the commemorative Parc du Cinquantenaire where shows and trade fairs are held in the shadow of its triumphal arch. You could also take a stroll round Mini-Europe, an interactive display of tiny replicas of European landmarks.

Must buys

Belgian chocolate is irresistible and perhaps the most obvious choice for a souvenir. If you're looking for designer clothes, you'll find a selection of smart shops around Avenue Louise and Avenue de la Toison d'Or. Other popular buys include lace, diamonds and antiques.

Must tries

Brussels has an array of culinary delights to tempt your palate. These include mussels, waffles, cookies, sweetbreads and Belgian 'French'fries. You may also wish to try the local speciality, waterzooi (fish stew). And, of course, you can't visit Belgium without sampling the mouth-watering chocolate.
