Viking River Cruises
The great capitals of Europe were built along rivers, and for centuries, cities showcased their best side to the water’s edge. From medieval times onwards the river in each city was one of the primary means of navigation. Nowadays the waterways make an ideal route for travellers eager to taste all the culture and heritage Europe has to offer.
With a fleet of more than 45 ships, Viking River Cruises offer a fantastic way to discover magnificent medieval cities, beautiful unspoilt valleys and natural beauty that has drawn travellers interested in geography, culture and history. Viking River Cruises also offers trips further afield, from the rivers of Russia to the waterways of Asia, giving tourists the chance to explore the Yangtze River in China, or along the Mekong River in Vietnam.
Destinations and itineraries
The modest sizes of the ships allow Viking River Cruises to explore cities and rivers that many other cruise ships can’t reach. Explore the romance of a Danube cruise on a Viking River Cruise boat, travelling between Nuremberg in Germany through the beautiful Bavarian countryside and onto Budapest in Hungary. Each trip includes a stop at the beautiful city of Vienna, giving visitors a chance to take in the magnificent sights of its baroque and medieval architecture.
Other European river cruise offerings include a sailing along the river Elbe between Prague and Berlin, and along the majestic Rhine, cruising between Amsterdam and Basel. There is also a chance to explore the canals of France on a seven night cruise through Bordeaux. The best of town and country cruising can be explored on a cruise along the river Seine, stopping at seven ports en route to Normandy including Rouen, Giverny and the city of light itself, Paris.
A cruise along the canals of Holland and Belgium takes in cosmopolitan Amsterdam and the mediaeval architectural treasures that make the city of Bruges famous - not forgetting the chocolate and beer! Other European rivers include the Moselle and the Rhone - many of them giving their names to wines that have made these regions world famous.
Russian cruises allow visitors to see the sights on some less well-travelled tourist routes. Boats sail along the river Dnieper between Odessa and Kiev in the Ukraine on a 12 day cruise taking in Sebastopol and Yalta.
Alternatively, why not head to the warmer waters of Iberia? Seven night cruises along the Douro, Portugal’s river of gold, sail between Lisbon and Oporto through some unspoilt landscapes that haven’t changed for decades - with Spanish and Portuguese stopping points all along the way.
Away from Europe, Viking River Cruises offer a unique travelling experience on the RV Indochina Pandaw, cruising between Cambodia and Vietnam, with destinations including Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh and Hanoi. In China the Viking Emerald reveals the treasures of the orient - from the natural wonders of the spectacular three gorges to the splendours of Beijing and Shanghai.
Cruise Ships and Facilities
Viking River Cruise ships offer a more intimate experience than their seagoing counterparts. The smallest boat, an accurate copy of a 1947 Irrawaddy Steamer, carries a select 60 passengers and even the largest boat only carries 250 passengers when full - modest by cruise line standards but guaranteeing a personal service.
The vast majority of the fleet was built in the last three or four years, ensuring each boat has the latest in modern comforts. A typical Viking River Cruise boat holds around 190 passengers, with even the smallest cabins being a generous 135 sq ft and the largest 445.
Bathrooms in all the suites have bathtubs. On board the latest additions to this modern fleet, such as the MV Viking Magni, you’ll find all the creature comforts of home, including a private bathroom, telephone, fridge, safe, hair dryer, and a spacious wardrobe. Each cabin has climate control and a Sony 26" flat-panel TV.
Around the boat facilities include a lounge bar, shop, laundry and a library. Each boat offers an exquisite dining experience with five course menus showcasing regional cuisine.
Passengers on a Viking River Cruise can take advantage of the best that Europe and Asia has to offer with a sedate and stately experience combining cruising culture, comfort and cuisine. No matter what corner of the continent you may be curious about, Viking River Cruises can take you there in style.
