Corfu is one of the most popular Greek islands with British tourists, and it's easy to see why. Its hundred miles of coastline and succession of beaches seem to absorb the host of visitors, leaving sleepy villages and country lanes untouched. Hillsides covered with ancient olive groves, pine forests and tall cypress trees sweep down to sand and shingle beaches, while along winding roads black-clad women still ride side-saddle on laden donkeys. In contrast, resorts which have sprung up around the coast cater for the liveliest of fun-lovers. Watersports are a speciality and there are some excellent schools with instructors who speak good English. But perhaps the best thing about Corfu is that everything is laid on for the British holidaymaker, yet in an atmosphere and setting that is totally Greek.
